Kate turns 5 soon (May 17th). This is wonderful and heartbreaking and scary and amazing and all of those things that go along with a little one on the spectrum growing a year older. Will she stand out more? Will she fall further behind? Will people stop considering her ninja persona cute (have they already)? Will she thrive? Will she crush expectations and blow us all away? Will people love her even more? Instead of agonizing over questions of development and fitting in, I've decided to agonize over something far more important. Her new big girl bedroom décor! When a fierce little girl tells you she is now a dinosaur-riding pirate ninja, you listen. Blue Dogwood Boutique and TipTopTeepee Shop along with some seriously lovely fans of this page, her friends and family and Kate, herself, have created a room worthy of that stealthy little pirate paleontologist. Obviously, we had the ninja stuff taken care of so I reached out to the fine folks at Blue Dogwood Boutique to help with combining pirates and dinosaurs (which was a lofty goal, I know) and check out the sweet artwork that now hangs in her room. These aren't print folks. These are the real deal and if you would be so kind as to check out this shop we would greatly appreciated it, because any friend of Kate's is a friend of ours. Use TEAMMATE at the checkout to receive a 10% discount until Oct 31st, 2015. Next, we reached out to our fab friends at the TiptopTeepee Shop and requested a little something our girl could find some sensory relief in, but could also make a bold buccaneer statement. They sent us the fabulous teepee you see below and you can't imagine her excitement when it was revealed to her. These teepees might be a prerequisite for every autism household or classroom. I think the part I like best, though, is that they come fully assembled! We even have some pirate material for curtains and a Jolly Rodger from a kind follower and they will be the perfect finishing touches to her room. If you're wondering why we surprised Kate early with her birthday gift, it's simple because we had to change her room very slowly. Change is hard, as anyone with a child on the spectrum can tell you. We made Kate a part of every aspect of this change and she is thrilled with her new room. Thank you friends! It's a pirate's life for her! Happy Birthday Baby!

You and your daughter are an inspiration. I don't have a child on the spectrum but I am an Educational Assistant. From reading your blog its obvious your little one is a treasure. I'm sure she will rock school. If you are going the public school route know that we love our school kids are much as our own! Good luck!
