![]() I'm writing that book you've been asking for. Well, not all of you have been asking for it. In fact, some of you might not be interested at all. Well, I guess if you were not interested in my book you would have stopped reading this already. God, I hope I don't go on like this in the book. Anyway, I guess to clarify, I am writing two books. I am writing a children's book which is my baby and I adore it and I am just waiting for someone to come begging to be my publisher. I would give you some more info but I would like to figure out how copyright law works before I share my intellectual property. As you know, the internet police are always on a break and I have already had some of my material brazenly stolen. These books may never make it to print but they will be written and at the very least my children will have a copy. So, if you have any advice on this process PLEASE comment below. I could really use your help. Otherwise, thanks for giving me the courage to write. If it wasn't for your kind comments and observations I would have given up long ago.

I have friends who have done limited run gift books through Lulu online. They have specials from time to time. I know a poet who has self published a few books, I'll check with him. :)

I self-published four poetry books through Kindle publishing. It was very easy to use and detailed info about copyright and other important things to know. here is the link https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishing/signin.

First, congrats on writing a book. That's awesome. To get it published, you have two choices.

There are actually way more than two choices, but Lynne certainly mentioned one of the most popular these days (CreateSpace) and the most coveted (traditional publishing). Both have their pros and cons. There are a bunch of self-publishing companies out there, which are little more than scams, but there is also a new concept that has recently emerged called "hybrid publishing". This is basically when a traditional publisher, with all the quality and reach you'd expect, opens their doors to a "risky" first-time author by asking the author to contribute financially to producing the book. It gives the author all the support and credibility of being traditionally published (for real) but it gives them a big leg up on being accepted at all. It's a nice compromise between the impossible-to-get-into traditional publishing and the empty-promises-print-any-old-junk self-publishing.

I had a relative who used this hybrid publishing model. He has now published two books successfully using this model and has secured a traditional publishing deal because of that.

My friend Colleen Hale has a daughter with autism, they live in Texas. Her daughter and her teacher wrote a book together - Colleen is a graphic designer and her autistic daughter has inherited some artistic skill! They recently published and are selling the book -It is fabulous! I bought 5 copies for gift giving.

I'm a graphic designer and have helped authors self-publish using Createspace.com for quite a few years. I'd be happy to help you with the project or just offer you some tips to get you started. I know how overwhelming the process can be. Feel free to contact me anytime.

Most publishing houses do not take unsolicited manuscripts and literary agents help you get your foot in the door. A good resource for more research is http://www.writersdigest.com/

A friend of mine shared your post about the airplane ride. So sweet. The reason she shared it with me is I have published a book called "Learning to Dance in the Rain: A Year of Weathering the Storm with an Autistic Child". Your story and my book go great together. I would love it if you would look it up on Amazon. I saw you comments about writing a book. It is no easy task! but sooooo worth it! I published mine Sept 5th 2013 and am having the "snowball" affects of it now. I have so much advice I couldn't even begin to type it down right now. But if you have a list of questions email me and I will do my best to answer them. Life is very busy, but I loved anyone who took the time to answer my questions at the time. Right now my book is published through Creatspace, but even there I have some advice. I have signed a contract with "Send the Light" and am waiting for them to send their signed copy back. Good luck!

Wow, publishing a book after raising an autistic toddler for all of a year post diagnosis. How brave. And not at all self-congratulatory.

Although I do believe strongly in the first amendment Monica, it seems like everyone here is shedding positive light. There will always be a naysayer-that's a given, and that is ok! The irony is that the negativity provides just one more reason for her to share her families story! To help people who judge hers, like you!

Monica, unless you have walked a day in her life, I don't think you should judge. I have a 10 year old autistic, biopolar daughter and it is by no means, an easy life. But even kids with autism sleep. I have years of experience with the schools and sensory issues that interfere with school. I love my daughter, but when I became a parent, I never knew it would be THIS hard. I have learned many lessons along the way and amen to someone wanting to share their experiences and possibly make someone else's path easier. God bless Kate and her family. We definitely have been there!

You can copywrite yourself at the government website. Very easy and they have a step by step tutorial. My sister is a song writer and I handle all her works this way. I have even used this process to protect a few t-shirt designs of my own. You can count on someone trying to nab your creative material and passing it off as their own ... Sad but true!!! Good Luck!

I was watching the news and saw the story about your "letter to daddy" going viral. I decided to come explore your website. I work in a classroom with students who have Autism and I love it. A friend that I work with recently let me borrow a book that her family friend wrote. It is a personal story about how she adopted a child from overseas and upon finding out that child had siblings, went back for the remainder of them, leaving her with a total of four adopted children. I checked the publisher information on it because I am hoping this publishing company will publish your books for you. It is actually located in a town that is fifteen minutes from me- Patchogue, NY. The name of it is HarPan Publishing and the email is HarPanPublishing@msn.com. I hope this helps, and best of luck! I look forward to continuing to read your blogs and eventually your books.

As a mom of an autistic 12 year old boy, I want to applaud you for your blog and book writing intents. You definitely have a flair for writing. Your honest and unapologetic approach gives other parenst hope and support. Your sense of humour speaks volumes to tortoise in the special club and hopefully speaks to those who need to show compassion. As your wonderful child grows you will notice how maturity itself can improve so many things. With the dedication you both have, your amazing Kate will only blossom in this world and open doors for herself and others, in her own badger way !! Cheers to you..thanks for being brave enough to put your life out there--it helps. I love my child even more now. From a Badger Mom
