In the Zone

In the first video Kate is the only child brave enough to take on the splash pad during an unseasonably cold day at Disney World. Her sister was off to enjoy a few rides that Kate didn't meet the height requirement for so we spent some time here, at Disney's new Big Top area.

As much as I enjoy watching these videos for the supreme cute factor, it is the second video that has me wondering. Kate will often 'zone out' like this after excitement. Do your children do this? It seems harmless enough and I will be bringing this video to the attention of her doctors since I finally caught an episode on video. Before you panic, I do know that seizures sometimes manifest in this way. I will ask her doctors to rule this out.

I used to worry about this with my daughter too (PDD NOS, now 4.5 years old). And you are right to video it and show it to a doctor, of course. But in the video Kate seems to respond to you pretty quickly when you speak to her (although maybe the zoning out was going on for a while before you turned the camera on?). And anecdotally other parents in similar boats had told me that if I could redirect her when she was zoning out, if I could get her to snap out of it by speaking to her, that it was most likely not seizure related. Again this is not to say you should not look into this further, as you are doing - I would too and did talk to doctors about my own girl. But in her case it really does seem to be that she just enjoys staring at things like overhead can lighting, because it stimulates her visually. Sometimes a zone out is just a zone out?

I am basically writing you back to give you all of my thanks. Ever since I finished working on the first kit (Love Me Again), my results have been excellent. All I can say is YES, YES YES!! You have been a great help to me and very patient as well. That is so important. When people start working on things that are new to them, there is so much that they don't know. Especially since working on such kits you are calling on spirits for help and you don't want to make any mistakes because you're afraid that anything could go wrong if the work is not done right (such as myself) and I know that I have questioned you a lot. I can admit that I was having some doubts at first and that I was just hoping that this relationship could be helped due to all of the negativity in the relationship. I found your blog through facebook, your post about Kate's plane ride and the stranger next to you. LOVED IT! My son is PDD-NOS, aged 12, and I seem to remember this behaviour in the past a bit, I have also heard what you have, about siezures and remember wondering that back then as well....but it was never something that he did often, and he doesn't do it anymore (well, he does zone out and not answer me....but not the same way! LOL).

Your daughter is beautiful, I look forward to reading more of your blog!

I felt compelled to comment on this entry because I used to do this too as a child, just zone out, no blinking or anything. I was always aware if someone called my name and was able to snap out of it right away. I had no autism or seizures. But it happened so frequently that my childhood friends still remember it, and it would happen without warning or trigger (so not necessarily out of excitement). I remember it happening in class, probably starting around the time I was 7 years old.

Eventually I grew out of it (I am in my late 20s now), although I have had a few "episodes" recently where I have caught myself doing it. Even as a child I usually realized I was doing it eventually and snapped myself out of it, rather than people having to call my attention back.

It's good to show it to the doctors just in case... But if looks like she night just be processing things. That may be why it follows a period of high excitement... Those moments can be harder to process and absorb.

Wanted to mention that I did this as a child as well, and even sometimes now in my early 40's I'll do it. I've never thought anything of it at all, other than me just thinking intently about something - but usually I'm having some free-form thoughts going on. I do zone out and I can hear what's going on around me, and at times, near the end, I'll even respond while still "in the zone" as I like to all it lol. Funny thing is that both of my daughters who are not on the spectrum at all - ages 5 & 3 - do this as well. I can say their names, say something funny, and they seem to know I'm talking to them but won't make eye contact with me and continue to fixate on whatever point they are staring at through the whole thing. Then I wave at them and say something like "Booty sandwiches" and laugh, and they'll snap out of it, laughing. I've never once thought about it being seizures only because I did the same as a child. I think you're right to check with a doctor based on your concern, but I just wanted to tell you that this looked very much like what goes on in my house as well.

I'm a teacher for preschoolers with special needs including autism. I wouldn't worry TOO much but of course, caution should always be taken if you are worried. I know quite a few of my students have done this before and it typically lasts less than a minute. To me, it almost seems like a processing time- like a delay in processing what just happened so they need a minute to regroup. I know many adults and children without autism that do this. The worry comes when you can't snap them out of it at all. I've yet to have a student we couldn't snap out. Interested to see what the doctor says.

Dear Shanelle. Im sitting in Arctic Norway, reading this story, that goes around the world after Huntington Post published it. I am a teacher, spending my days around Children of all types, with different kinds of backgrounds, possibilities, challenges, etc etc... I have also read some of your posts in this blog, and Shanelle. I am not just moved by the man in seat 16C, also I am moved by how you and your husband are making a difference about Kate. Please have understanding for me trying to explain myself in English, but stories beeing told, like yours, makes the rest of us feel. And when we feel we think, and when we think there is hope! Like a few other people have said, this used to happen to me, and still happens if I let it. I learned at some point that doing it in front of other people weirds them out, so I only indulge when I feel like I really need it-- like when I'm feeling overwhelmed or need to block everything out to focus on something confusing/interesting.

I'm a pre school teacher who has dealt with undiagnosed kids with what we suspected was Autism. I have researched this and asked a friend who has an child with Autism for advice. To me she was having a blast, just kept running the same pattern to where the water came from. I think she just needed to stop and refocus, the sounds and activity might have overwhelmed her for a minute, but she was trying to get back to fun. And it was cold here, so she probably was trying to absorb everything she was felling and moved on. But I would show the doctors, just to ease your mind. Thank you for sharing!

Isabel used to zone out much more than she does now (at age 6). I could repeat her name over and over and get no response until she was "done." She did have a seizure over the summer and was diagnosed with a seizure disorder, which made me suspect that these "zone outs" were seizure related. But a 24 hour EEG showed that there was no seizure activity during those times, and she really was just zoning out.

My son ASD and now 8 still does a zone out when overstimulated. It is pretty common with autism and often has nothing to do with seizures. At least that is what we have found out because when he was younger we thought it might be seizure related too. Thanks for posting about Disney, we were contemplating taking a trip with him there maybe this year. Wondering if it is worth braving the crowds or not with him as he hates crowds.

I discovered this blog this week, too. Think I'll have some interesting reading this week. I'm an adult with an ASD, and I still sometimes zone out like that. As far as I know, it's something I started doing as a very small kid. For me, it's mostly just a processing thing. There's only so much processing power to go around, and inside of head gets priority, so rest of world gets ignored briefly. Can be from a relatively good overwhelmed due to excitement, can also be an attempt to avoid a meltdown. Supermarket is prime territory for that. Too much white noise, spend a minute staring blankly at the shelf full of coke bottles while talking to brain until it decides to be coherent again.

Hi there!

I am a specialist teacher working with students with ASD and also supporting parents and staff of in terms of training, programme development etc. In one of our behavioural courses that we offer we show this graph of states of arousal/excitement and how it relates to behaviour. Think of it as a speed bump where it rises and then comes down again. The way we would explain it to parents is that after a peak in arousal, excitement or behaviour (either positive or negative) there is always this recovery state, which is technically called depression. Children in this state can often zone out, withdraw or even fall asleep. Think of it as after a giant tantrum how some will collapse on the the floor and rest quietly, sleep or even cry (this is an extreme example but I'm sure you get what I mean). It could be that in this case she is so excited/over stimulated that this "zone out" phase is her way of quietly recovering from the elevated level of arousal, and emotion she has just felt. As always, keep an eye on it and if it happens more often and not without this exciting or elevated state before hand and it becomes impossible to pull her out of it then you can always look into it to calm your nerves. I wouldn't be too concerned just yet though :)

Maybe she's just processing...picture that spinning wheel on your computer. There's a lot of information to take in and sometimes it takes a moment for all of her senses to ingest it all. Just my impression of the video.

I just happened upon your story on Yahoo and I thought I would check out your blog. I also have a son with autism and he is 4 and 1/2 years old. He also will zone out like that especially if there is a lot going on in a room. He has done it for as long as I can remember. I also think it is his way of processing.
It's definitely a good idea to show it to your doc if you are worried (mom's instincts always come first) But I think it will probably be fine.

My son has these episodes and he is clinically diagnosed with absent seizures (all eeg's are normal, so the neuro surgeon and neurologist believe my sons are too deep in the brain to capture). My son started them at 9 months old, though typical absent seizures usually present around 3 to 5yrs old. It would be worth seeing a pediatric neuro as absent seizures can cause learning problems because the brain is stopping and starting all day long. Most absent seizures last 15secs to 45secs and kids most often are labeled as 'day dreamers'. On another note, Kate is adorable and is looks like she is having so much fun.

I work with 18-21 year olds with a range of intellectual barriers including two 6 feet tall identical twins with autism. They are very daunting at first but are amazing once you get to know them, they are so smart and have great memories and have amazing and very different personalities. When we go on outings or on public transport I often wondered what their parents would of went through as they grew up, your blogs show me both the struggles and sense of pride that you go through and I hope my comment shows you that there are always people (just like the business man on the plane) who will understand Kate and help her make the most of every day

Thanks for posting. I have just discovered your blog today thanks to your "Dear Daddy" letter. I have a 4-year-old son with ASD. He finds busy, crowded places very challenging. He will often zone out like this when he's tired or over-stimulated. I myself don't have ASD but even I find this happens sometimes when I'm very tired. I really do think that sometimes a zone-out is just that. Our brains way of giving itself a break in a situation that may not otherwise allow for that. Little Kate was clearly enjoying her time at Disneyland, but just because we enjoy something does not mean it's not a lot to take in. Especially for a small child and x2 again for a child with ASD. Looks like she's doing a great job, as are you. Thanks again for sharing.

Hi, I saw a link to your blog on a national newspaper website and was touched by your story. I feel compelled to leave a message after seeing the two clips. My son who is now 11 was diagnosed as being on the autistic spectrum and with tourettes at quite a young age. He has on a few occasions zoned out such as this, normally when talking about something he is excited in or something he really isn’t looking forward too. The neuro-specialists he sees in London believe this to be hyper-imagination where he is running through his thoughts as if in a video and capturing his thoughts in extreme detail. We have been assured they are not seizures as they did a few small tests to check this.
It was extremely scary to witness this at first but he is ok afterwards although sometimes feels a little confused.
Your daughter is beautiful and it’s lovely to see such a warm, caring family environment. My best wishes to you and your husband and obviously Kate.

I have a three year old Sadie very much like Kate. Her staring spells were far more frequent at 2 and they tended to cluster together. They have gotten better, and yes we did lots of tests, one 1 hour and one 12 hour test with about 25 wires connected. I got to hit a button every time the spell started. Sadie showed no seizure behavior. I think its her way of regrouping. Kind of like when you get off the teacups at DisneyWorld. I hope it proves to be nothing significant, but I have worried about the same thing many time.

She's so smart! I think her "zoning out" is actually a moment to process everything that just happened. She might even be thinking " How did that work"? "Where did that water come from?" She might have trouble expressing these thoughts to you or anyone else for that matter.

My not on spectrum, profoundly gifted kid did this same age, but when something specific happened. She had been put into a tight lyrca suit by her Ot(some motor delay and sensory issues, turned out all vision related) for 2 weeks and this started to happen. It totally freaked me out too. I think it was happening, or so is the consensus of her team, because she was getting so much input in, that she wasn't used to before, that it overwhelmed, and she had to shut down to process,as one other comment above said. There was also some regression in some behaviors and lots of meltdowns around this time the day a it happened. I thought the perspective would be helpful to you. She has been checked out, they weren't seizures, looked identical to me. Btw she also did a lot of toe walking. So I'm going to throw out some unsolicited but possibly useful advise from my parenting lens and reading. If you google, there is lots of research done about the correspondence of vision issues and autism and their impact in joint attention etc, an area my kid had started to have issues in, as her vision problems started. She didn't have this at birth. Toe walking is common in kids with vision issues,it's a way to compensate to try to see better. From the video, it seems that possibly there may be some visual motor issues. Has she been checked out by a behavioral, developmental pediatric eye doctor? A non-behavioral won't work, they have a totally different, whole child approach and will not take account the sensory issues or understand the hearing overlap as well. It might make a world of difference if there is a problem - our pediatrician, in fact our whole team missed it. I listened to my gut and went anyway when they were all telling me not to bother and it turned out to be the biggest gain. All sensory stuff gone in 6 months, joint attention back to where everyone wants it to be. I mean, we got so lucky. Magic. The other thing about the toe walking, is once you start, you get tight ankles and it's hard to stop. A good pt knows how to lay the child on stomach, check tightness in calf, and check the angle to which the foot will flex, and treat accordingly, which may break the cycle.

I am 29 years old. I started "zoning out" like this about a yr. and a half ago. At first they thought it was seizures. They did a myriad of tests, they all came back negative. I was also having sensory problems (overload), and meltdowns (which my husband and I didnt know what they were). Turns out, my neurologist and psych diagnosed me with Asperger's. The "spacing out" I do, is when my mind becomes so overloaded that I "shut off" everything. Thank you for your site and posts. You have no idea what this means to me. 29 years of not knowing, no answers.

In your own word's;

Yet we have airlines themselves that have already made that judgement when it comes to men sitting next to children.

My 3 year old son does some strange things, including the zoning out. I had him tested with early intervention and they said he was fine. My niece also does the zoning out. We asked the peds and she said it's normal and kids do it to regroup and even us adults do it but it's not as noticeable.

My daughter who is 2 1/3 does the same thing. She zones out when she's tired. Kind of like day dreaming. My pediatrician said it was normal.

My son was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was a little over the age of 2. These "staring" spells were how his seizures started. I had been working in neurology for 3 years as an RN at the time, so I knew right away. They are different that "zoning out" as you can't snap him out of it. He has been seizure free on medication for a year and a half. It's great you got that video! Neurologists love it :) Hope it's nothing. Your daughter is beautiful by the way!

My daughter had similar seizures were she would zone out up to 20 seconds. it was Petit Mal. She use to take epilim for this however as she got older around 13 the events stopped. She is now 28 and has never had an event since this time,

Your Daughter is absolutely Beautiful! My daughter was diagnosed autism spectrum at an early age and specified Asperger's a couple years ago. She used to do the zone out as well. She is 9 and I do not notice this as often as when she was younger. As she gets older she is getting to be a better and better communicator. I once asked her where she went when she does this. Her response was that sometimes there gets to be too much for her so she takes a break in her head. Definitely talk to your specialists, but as many have pointed out it is common. She is a cutie!

Hi...I have also done the zoning out ever since I was a kid and I am not 34. My son who is 6 does it as well. I think it's kind of like day dreaming. Like thinking about something in depth and kind of getting lost in the moment. I and my son always snap right out of it immediately. Sometimes we don't answer immediately but we can hear what's going on or being said. Also if I'm not mistaken if it's seizure activity I think her pupils would be large instead of small like they were in the video. Good luck with finding the answers you are looking for. In the pre dx days my son used to zone out after sensory overload, even going catatonic as once described by my husband the paramedic. He's five now and those episodes are thankfully rare. The more progress he's made with self regulation, the fewer and less severe the episodes have become. Good luck! I'm SO glad I discovered your blog.

My daughter would gaze off like daydreaming & not know what we had said. After my own research I suspected seizures & it was confirmed by a neurologist. He was able to induce them in the office. A year of meds she was declared seizure free. Well, it's been two years and she's starting to do such as our daughter. We had an EEG done today and some stimulus activities were videotaped.
