Dear Kate, Why must I we always make so many exceptions for you? I understand you have sensitivities but, come on. Now, I'm an asshole if I want to go to a nice restaurant and enjoy some peace and quiet? This doesn't seem fair, does it? I just wish someone would think of my comfort for once. Sincerely, Tired of Accommodating Everyone Dear Tired, I hear you. I do. I just don't give a damn. I accommodate the hell out of the world all day long when I bear the overwhelming smells, sights, sounds and ridiculously confusing social norms. Furthermore, I am little and you are big, so in the words of the great Frank Herbert: If wishes were fishes, we’d all cast nets. Best, Kate Dear Kate, I've been around for years longer than you and autism seems to be the flavour of the week, so to speak. When I was growing up you rarely heard about autism. Don't you think that we are going a little overboard diagnosing every 'difficult' child with autism. In my day, we would have called you brats and left it at that. No Disrespect, Concerned Citizen Dear Concerned, Rather than looking critically at the number of diagnoses surrounding us, use that analytical mind of yours and do some serious autism research for me. Start with some parenting blogs and move on to some current peer-reviewed studies on the subject. Then we can talk. Best, Kate Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. George Bernard Shaw Dear Kate, I swear, if I hear the word 'autism' one more time, I am going to explode. Sincerely, Balloon Knot Dear Balloon Knot, Autism, Autism, Autism, Autism, Autism, Autism, Autism, Autism, Autism, Autism, Autism. Beware; for I am fearless, and therefore powerful. Frankenstein, Mary Shelley

I am also a mother of an Autistic child! I have been through all lot of embarrassment with melt downs in the stores and public places before he was diagnosed. I now know that there are many people out there that do not understand the whole concept of being Autistic just know that there are many out there that do and support you and what you do.

My daughter also has Autism. She is precious, loving, hilarious, rambunctious, and full of fire, even during the rough times. I'm sure you are equally as awesome, and just LOVE reading about your adventures!

Never reduce a child/student to a behaviour. Don't speak of them in terms of things they do. Does that make sense? Also, don't look for an antecedent for each behaviour as there may be none. Can you tell I'm not a behaviourist? :)

I disagree. Sometimes the antecedent may be hard to find, but it is always present. I AM a behaviorist with a 7.5 year old son with autism, and I know all too well what will trigger his meltdowns, such as eating at a new restaurant, but these are things he has to get used to. I use my ABA knowledge to make sure that those meltdowns do not get out of control and last for shorter and shorter periods of time. While Behaviorism and ABA do not have all the answers, they are the MOST useful for my son and my family.
