Autism is a disorder that affects many areas of development but many of us would agree that the issues surrounding communication might be the cruelest of all. And, not for the reasons you might think. I don't care if Kate cannot recite her ABC's. I don't care if Kate says "I wuv ew" instead of "I love you", forever. I don't care if Kate excels academically or if she does not. I care that Kate struggles to communicate how she feels and what she needs and it ends up in frustrated tears every single day. I care that my frustration cannot begin to compare to hers.

Kate is making good progress and although she has much work ahead, I feel so strongly that Kate will develop strong communication skills and will teach us so much along the way. Trust that this is true !

Hi there, I've just discovered your blog and am so happy I did. I too am a mommy to a beautiful 6 yr old girl who too has been diagnosed with autism. I'm with you, I just want her to able to tell me what she is feeling and what is happening. Their anxiety and stress is over the frustration of not being able to communicate what's inside. Which only frustrates and stresses us parents as well. Just have hope and faith...and believe.
