I know I owe you some reality. My social media mentions have been of the 'feel good' variety lately and while there is nothing wrong with that for a short time, it is crucial that our community share authentic experiences for the purposes of education and solidarity. I wouldn't call myself an "inspiration pornographer" so to speak, but I'm admittedly enjoying watching the 'likes' climb on posts that have been a tad curated, if I am being completely honest. So, in the spirit of sharing the bad with the good, here is a laundry list of reality for you: 1. I cried filling out Kate's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Valentines for her because I don't know if she has any friends. 2. I have been 'phoning it in' at work lately because sleep has been elusive. 3. I've hit my heaviest weight, ever. Don't worry, I am not depressed. I just feel it might be irresponsible of me to share only the good. Who can relate to that? Certainly not me.

I could have written all three. I (shamefully) admit to trying to make my sons valentines the coolest so that the kids might try to include him more. (They are great kids and it's usually more of my child avoiding them.)

With you 3000%. Came across your story and blog right at the time my son was having his worst challenges yet with autism. I will take the good, the bad, the ugly - whatever you have to post because it reminds me I'm not alone.

Reading your posts make me a better Mother, Teacher, and person! It is awesome that you can basque in the rays of good days as you encounter hard ones far more than some! You have chosen not to dwell on only the rough ones! Raising and teaching children is the hardest and most rewarding job we have been entrusted to! So my sweet mom....rant and praise and enjoy your Grace and Katie!

Kate has many friends, I see it when I pick her up at daycare, they love her and she them. Kate is a True friend and other kids feel that from her every day :) You my darling will conquer your weight, you have done it before and seeing how far Kate comes every day will give you the peace to concentrate on yourself. Your Mother knows these things :) XOX

I completely get the "friend" thing. My daughter is almost 9 & we just got her dx last summer. Prior to that & getting her into a special needs school, she had no friends. Never got invitations to parties or play dates. I can tell you that it DOES get better, Mom. She'll find someone that gets her & they'll get along.

Shanell, I'm 100% sure Kate has friends. I was worried about Alex too and he's won some children over! Their charm is impossible to ignore.

Just wanted to let you know that my son takes about her all the time so I know for a fact she had a friend. And when he came home with his Valentines today I knew which one was hers before I even read the name :)

All of those could be me...(if I had the energy to do valentine's day cards.) Thanks for saying it out loud and helping me feel okay to say them outloud and own them.
